Do you think you’re an expert on Italian cuisine? You’ll gain a whole new appreciation for it when you dine at Balena.
This rustic yet elegant eatery at 1633 N. Halsted Street was named one of the top 10 new U.S. restaurants of 2013 by international lifestyle rating website Gayot. Chef/owner Chris Pandel’s creativity is evident in the starters such as lamb liver and strawberry mostarda crostini or Caesar salad with kale instead of romaine.
Pasta is served the traditional way as a mid-course, but the preparations are modern. A popular choice is the orechiette with kale, lemon, bread crumbs and chili. For a real treat, share an entree of the 42-ounce dry aged costata, or porterhouse, prepared with lemon and anchovy butter. Pizzas are equally upscale with combinations like mortadella, pistachio pesto and red onion.
Hours at Balena are: Monday through Thursday 5 pm – 10 pm; Friday 5 pm – 11 pm; Saturday 4:30 pm – 11 pm; and Sunday 4:30 pm – 10 pm.Back to all posts
