Discover the Vibrant Oak Park Theater Scene

When residents of Oak Park Place Apartments want to go out for an evening’s entertainment, there is no shortage of culture. Our area includes three different venues that present live theater shows for many different tastes. All are easy to get to from our community and are close to excellent restaurants. Here are three of our favorites in the Oak Park theater scene:

Oak Park Festival Theater

Though known in the area as a great place to enjoy outdoor performances in the summer, the Oak Park Festival Theater presents shows year-round. During the holiday season, there will be a run of A Dickens Carol from November 24 to December 30, 2018. Once the weather warms up, patrons are invited to bring picnics and blankets to lounge on the lawn. You can even bring your dog!

This Oak Park theater is a brief walk from the CTA Green line and the wide variety of restaurants nearby include Mexican, seafood, vegetarian, and Middle Eastern.

Madison Street Theater

This intimate theater allows local actors to shine in productions that are traditionally presented at much larger venues. In the past, the Madison Street Theater offered lively productions of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and 13: the Musical. They also include more thought-provoking fare, such as a recent run of Big Giant Love. Regulars praise the productions for being both high quality and affordable.

The theater has a small concession stand in case you get hungry, but the surrounding neighborhood includes good restaurants such as the Mexican cuisine of New Rebozo or barbecue at Skrine Chops. There is plenty of street parking and the venue is on the 320 line.

Ovation Academy for Performing Arts

Support the young performers in our community by attending one of the regular productions at the Ovation Academy for the Performing Arts. Kid-friendly shows such as Roald Dahl’s Matilda, the Musical are a good way to expose younger people to live theater in an accessible environment. The performers, between the ages of four and fifteen, are students at the academy. The musical productions give kids a chance to show off their carefully honed acting, dancing, and singing skills. Shows range between 30 to 60 minutes long.

Tickets are very inexpensive and the school is a short walk from the CTA Green Line. There are lots of appealing Italian restaurants in the neighborhood, including Cucina Paradiso and Il Vicolo Trattoria.
