Sometimes when that afternoon slump has you really feeling down, all you need is a cup of coffee to make things right again. Mulata is a new coffee house and Brazilian kitchen that’s the perfect spot for your afternoon pick-me-up.
The Origins of Mulata
Mulata is the creation of Cristiane Pereira, a Brazilian chef who wished to bring her native cuisine to the Oak Park area. The diverse menu draws influence not only from Brazil, but also from American cuisine. All of their coffee is ethically sourced from farms in the various regions of Brazil.
Mulata feels welcoming, yet energized. It’s a space where you can kick back with the morning paper, or sit on your laptop and fire off a few emails. While you wait for your order, you can watch the baristas prepare coffee behind the bar, taking in the rousing aroma of freshly ground coffee beans as you wait. The large menu mounted behind the counter is clear and easy to read.
Mulata makes all of your favorite espresso drinks, from cappuccinos to macchiatos. They also offer some fancier, sweeter creations like chai latte and iced vanilla coffee. You can substitute soy, almond, or oat milk into any coffee to make it vegan.
If you’re in the mood for a snack alongside your coffee, you have plenty of choices. Indeed, try the Brazilian cheese bread or empanadas. If you have a larger appetite, order the Carne Louca, a gourmet sandwich made with mozzarella, braised beef, caramelized onions, and bell pepper.
